Written by one of the foremost scholars of African art and featuring 129 color images, Postcolonial Modernism chronicles the emergence of artistic modernism in Nigeria in the heady years surrounding political independence in 1960, before the outbreak of civil war in 1967. Chika Okeke-Agulu traces the artistic, intellectual, and critical networks in several Nigerian cities. Zaria is particularly important, because it was there, at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, that a group of students formed the Art Society and inaugurated postcolonial modernism in Nigeria. As Okeke-Agulu explains, their works show both a deep connection with local artistic traditions and the stylistic sophistication that we have come to associate with twentieth-century modernist practices. He explores how these young Nigerian artists were inspired by the rhetoric and ideologies of decolonization and nationalism in the early- and mid-twentieth century and, later, by advocates of negritude and pan-Africanism. They translated the experiences of decolonization into a distinctive "postcolonial modernism" that has continued to inform the work of major Nigerian artists.

During the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, coloniality emerged as a new structure of power as Europeans colonized the Americas and built on the ideas of Western civilization and modernity as the endpoints of historical time and Europe as the center of the world. Walter D. Mignolo argues that coloniality is the darker side of Western modernity, a complex matrix of power that has been created and controlled by Western men and institutions from the Renaissance, when it was driven by Christian theology, through the late twentieth century and the dictates of neoliberalism. This cycle of coloniality is coming to an end. Two main forces are challenging Western leadership in the early twenty-first century. One of these, “dewesternization,” is an irreversible shift to the East in struggles over knowledge, economics, and politics. The second force is “decoloniality.” Mignolo explains that decoloniality requires delinking from the colonial matrix of power underlying Western modernity to imagine and build global futures in which human beings and the natural world are no longer exploited in the relentless quest for wealth accumulation.

Dit essay wil het debat vooruithelpen door terug te koppelen naar de ontstaansperiode van de moderne democratie. Daarbij wordt de opkomst van de natiestaat herbekeken in een brede politieke en intellectuele context, en worden de ideologische drijfveren achter het introduceren van het nationalisme in het politiek discours blootgelegd. Het centrale betoog luidt dat het duurzaam succes van het 19de-eeuwse natiestaatmodel, en van de politiek van het nationalisme, alleen begrepen kan worden als keerzijde van de teloorgang van het (neo)klassieke republicanisme – een denkstroming over vrijheid, soevereiniteit en burgerschap die haar oorsprong in de renaissance vond en aan de basis lag van de revolutionaire gebeurtenissen op het einde van de 18de eeuw. Het essay geeft zo een aanzet tot de herontdekking van dit gedachtegoed, en onderkent hierin de belofte van een hernieuwd politiek engagement voor transnationalisme en universalisme. Stefaan Marteel (1977) studeerde geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Gent en behaalde in 2009 zijn doctoraat aan het Europees Universitair Instituut in Firenze. Hij gaf les aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en is de auteur van The Intellectual Origins of the Belgian Revolution: Political Thought and Disunity in the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Palgrave 2018).
